Online DOT Driver Application FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Learn how SCT Portal simplifies online DOT driver applications, CDL driver hiring, applicant tracking, document management, and employee personnel records.
What is an online DOT driver application?
An online DOT driver application allows trucking companies and motor carriers to collect employment applications electronically. Instead of completing paper forms, applicants submit their information online, allowing employers to review and manage driver applications from a centralized system. DOT-regulated employers must also ensure their application process meets applicable FMCSA requirements under 49 CFR 391.21.
How do applicants submit an online driver application?
SCT Portal provides each company with a unique online application link that can be shared with prospective employees. Applicants open the link, complete the application, and submit their information electronically. Submitted applications automatically appear in the company's SCT Portal Applications dashboard for review.
What information is required on a DOT driver employment application?
Under 49 CFR 391.21, DOT driver employment applications must contain applicable information such as the driver's name, address, date of birth, employment history, driving experience, accident history, traffic violations, and driver's license information. Additional information may be required depending on the driver's operating responsibilities and applicable regulations.
Can applicants upload documents with their application?
SCT Portal supports electronic document management for driver applications. Supporting documents can be uploaded and organized with the applicant's record. Employers can access application documents, authorization records, and other uploaded files directly from the Applications dashboard, reducing the need for paper filing.
What happens when an applicant is hired?
When an applicant is hired, the employer enters the employee's hire date in SCT Portal. The applicant's information is automatically moved into the Personnel section, reducing duplicate data entry and simplifying the transition from applicant to employee. Employers can then continue managing personnel records within SCT Portal.
How does online driver application software help with DOT compliance?
Online driver application software helps motor carriers organize employment applications, supporting documents, and hiring records. Centralized digital records can make information easier to retrieve during compliance reviews and DOT audits. Employers remain responsible for verifying driver qualifications, completing required background investigations, and maintaining compliant Driver Qualification Files under applicable FMCSA regulations.
